Among the attractions here is the Gibeon Meteorite Fountain. Around 150 tons of space debris fell near Gibeon in Southern Namibia thousands of years ago. The meteorites were found by Captain J. E. Alexander in 1838, and 31 of the 77 meteorites are now displayed on columns of steel to allow visitors the chance to view the largest meteor shower the world has ever seen. The meteorites' age is estimated to be 4 billion years.
Twyfelfontein, which means 'doubtful fountain,' was named by a farmer who doubted that the spring could sustain his cattle for very long. Today, the spring is still there. However, Twyfelfontein's fame does not lie in its water supply, but in its prehistoric rock engravings and paintings. It has the largest amount of ancient rock art in Namibia, with about 2,500 designs, and is a national monument.
The Spitzkop is an island of granite peaks in a vast grassy plain. Groot Spitzkop is called the 'Matterhorn of Africa' because the two are shaped alike. These mountains, combined with the nearby Pontok Mountains and the Little Spitzkoppe, are a climber's paradise. The huge granite rocks formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity. Erosion throughout the years has formed intriguing rock formations.
