Located nearly midway between Hawaii and the continent of Australia is the island nation of Tuvalu. It is part of the world that is known as Polynesia and its neighbors include Kiribati, Fiji, and Samoa. Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries in the world. Its proximity to Australia make it a favourite place for Australians to take a holiday.

Tuvulu's first inhabitants were Polynesians before it became a British entity in the late 1800s. It became an independent nation in 1974. Relics from its early times can be seen in its many archaeological sites, including a religious site which includes an altar believed to have been used for sacrifices.

Tuvalu offers many activities that can be enjoyed by Aussie visitors of all ages. Since it was used as a Pacific base for American soldiers there are many World War II relics and even a plane wreck on the reef. The fish and turtles that make their homes on the reefs that surround the island are beautiful. Sometimes you can see large sharks and dolphins. The Tuvalu people sell their hand crafted items at markets throughout the islands.
If you visit Tuvalu during certain seasons you can enjoy the many feasts and observe the beautiful dances that are distinct to the island. One thing that you definitely don't want to miss on your Tuvalu holiday is swimming in one of the many lagoons and lounging on one of its sandy beaches.
