Port MoresbyPort Moresby is the capital of New Guinea, and due to the rain shadow it lies in, not nearly as wet as the rest of the island. The city is an interesting mix of old and new. You can see glass skyscrapers downtown, and houses on stilts like a fishing crane's legs down by the harbor. The history buff will want to pay a visit as this was a significant part of the Pacific Theatre of WWII.
Flights out of Australia to the city are cheap and easy to book. Once the traveller is in the city, they will want to visit the botanic gardens, which boast a large collection of unusual and beautiful plants and some rare animals as well. The Port Moresby Golf Club has affordable prices and nice greens. Plan your trip around the last weekend of the month and catch the Ela Beach Craft Market for surprisingly cheap souvenirs. Walk the Kokoda Trail and ponder the men who fought for freedom there.
Travel to Port Moresby can be challenging, but rewarding as the scenery just outside the city can be breathtaking, and the mild weather year-round comfortable. Plan a couple of day trips to scuba dive or visit Yule Island. The diving near Port Moresby offers opportunities to see reefs filled with marine life, and WWII wrecks slumbering peacefully beneath the waves.
