Making the Most of Perth
Perth may be Australia's most under-appreciated city by Australians, but the British migrate to it in droves and Americans often say it reminds them of “the America we grew up in.” Vacationers seeking a second but less expensive Sydney will be disappointed, as will those craving the island-studded nirvana of the coastal Reef region. But those willing to spend a bit of time exploring and let Perth be Perth will find plenty to see and do.Flying into Perth Airport over empty expanses of land and water make it easy to see why Perth has been called the most isolated city on earth. Yet it's this lack of crowding that foreigners prize, and in place of bright-lights-big-city hustle there's a laid-back vibe and close-knit camaraderie.
Though prices have risen in Perth as they have elsewhere, the city's chief attractions are often inexpensive to enjoy. Inside the city limits, Perth is easy to navigate, with free city buses and a small, concentrated downtown area. At Barrack Square, the Swan Bell Tower is a relatively new landmark, recognizable by its green glass spire and copper sails. Shoppers with a whimsical bent will enjoy London Court, whose Tudor-themed shop fronts have all the authenticity of an Errol Flynn movie and perfectly convey the low-key charm of Perth.
Perth is a river town, and a boat cruise on the Swan River is a wonderful way to see the area. There are a variety of cruises to choose from, including lunch and dinner trips and cruises to area wineries. Families with children can make a day of it and combine a cruise with a stop at the Perth Zoo, where the animals of Australia, Asia, and Africa roam native habitat areas.
Car hire costs more here than elsewhere, but provides access to memorable excursions outside the city. The Perth area claims some of the country's most beautiful beaches, and swimming, snorkeling, and windsurfing are popular. Hunting for antiques and browsing the local markets in Perth Hills is a relaxing day trip, while more active types can head southeast to the Peel region for hiking, biking, fishing, and white water rafting. Less than an hour's drive into the Darling Range lies the Heritage region, where small towns and farms provide a glimpse into Australia's past.
A good time to visit is in September and October, when the entire region, including Perth, sports drifts of spring wildflowers in full bloom.
