PapeeteThe city of Papeete is on the island of Tahiti, and is the capital of French Polynesia. The international airport is in the adjacent town of Faa'a, with airline service to Australia. The beaches around Papeete are world-famous among surfers seeking the giant waves, who attend the Billabong Pro surfing competition for two weeks every year.
At the Le Vaima commercial centre in Papeete there are vendors displaying local arts and crafts, plus fresh fish and flowers. The Museum of Tahiti displays the history of Polynesian Culture, and the botanical garden is a favorite attraction with visitors. The Robert Wan Pearl Museum is unique.
Tahiti is divided into the main island of Tahiti Nui and the smaller island of Tahiti Iti, together they are the biggest island in French Polynesia. Papeete is connected to the nearby island of Moorea by daily service aboard ferries and on local airline flights. Moorea is only about fifteen miles away.
