y. The Mauritius Botanical Garden is the oldest botanic garden in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1767 and covered with palms and water lilies. Fort Adelaide dominates the scenery around the capital city of Port Louis, where many French colonial buildings are preserved. The Mauritius National History Museum, the Mauritius Chinatown, and the Port Louis Bazaar are favorites with visitors.

On the southwest side of the island is the Black River Gorges National Park, where the Black River Peak is the highest point in Mauritius. There are over fifty miles of trails through this protected rainforest, as well as picnic areas.

In eastern Mauritius is the village of Flacq, which offers the largest open-air market on the island. Near Flacq is Ile aux Cerfs, an island with beautiful beaches and a lagoon. On the north end of Mauritius is Gabriel Island, a protected preserve with tranquil beaches surrounded by crystal-clear waters that are a favorite with snorkelers and scuba divers

Home to many rare birds, Ile aux Aigrettes is a tiny coral island managed by the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, just off the town of Mahebourg. A busy fishing village on Grand Port Bay, Mahebourg is near the ruins of the old Balaclava estate along the shore.
