The Central American country of Guatemala is a representative democracy with a population of about 16 million. IF you take a flight there from Australia, you will find a biologically diverse country filled with fascinating remnants of the Mayan civilization that lived there for thousands of years before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s.

Because of the prevalence of Mayan culture in this area up until a few centuries ago, the country of Guatemala is filled with indigenous art dating back to the Pre-Columbian era. Many such artifacts can be found in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. In addition to this ancient artwork, Guatemala houses many museums that feature more modern art, as contemporary movements have made their way to this country as well, influencing its artists. Guatemala's music, like its art, reflects both the indigenous culture and the impact of Europe. The music of Europe hit Guatemala before most of the rest of Central America, and modern music of the country heavily incorporates that style. The most prominent instrument in the country is the marimba, which can be found in many musical pieces of the region.

Many visitors travel to Guatemala in hopes of seeing ancient Mayan ruins, and these are intriguing structures, while the European flavor is again felt in the churches that now fill the country, which is 99 percent Christian. The old and new alongside each other make Guatemala a grand destination.
