As the most prosperous of the former-Soviet countries, Estonia is an ideal place for Australian traveller's looking for something out of the ordinary. The northernmost of the Baltic countries, Estonia was once part of the fabled Holy Roman Empire. After being conquered first by Sweden, and then by Russia, Estonia took the opportunity presented by the 1917 Russian Revolution to declare its independence.

Although Estonia was independent for only 22 years, the country maintained its unique culture under Soviet occupation and regained its independence in 1991. Tallinn, Estonia's capital, is a bustling city of 400,00 that still retains its medieval flair. In fact, a visit to Medieval Old Town Tallinn is one of the best ways to experience pre-Renaissance Europe without owning a time-machine. If you do decide to visit, Tallinn has an excellent airport with daily flights to and from Europe's major cities.

As one of the newest members of the E.U., Estonia also has many natural features not found in Western Europe. Fully half of Estonia is still forested, and wolves and bears may be encountered along the country's many hiking trails. Because of its latitude, it's also possible to drive over the frozen Baltic Sea from mainland Estonia to many of its 1,500 islands. Of course, this can only be done during winter. If you're up for Scandinavia, with a twist, then Estonia is a great place to start.
