The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The country is also known as Santo Domingo, which is the name of it's capital. The Dominican Republic has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. The capital and largest city of Santo Domingo on the south coast has the largest airport. Flight connections to Australia can be made through the United States or Europe. The Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean, and the hills and mountains covered with tropical vegetation in the Dominican Republic are a tropical hiking and bird-watching paradise. At Puerto Plata there are several all-inclusive resorts along the twenty miles of beach.

An extensive telecommunications network, with wi-fi, internet, and cable services have also helped make Santo Domingo popular with visitors. The network of six national roads connects all of the Dominican Republic, and the new Santo Domingo metro is the second in the entire Caribbean and Central America.
