With Royal Brunei Airlines' recent instigation of cheap flights to Brunei from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and other Australian cities, the hitherto remote and exotic sultanate of Brunei has suddenly become one of the top family-favorite ports of call. Why? Because nearly 40 percent of Brunei is preserved as the Ulu Temburong National Park, one of the earth's most diverse ecosystems, home to literarily thousands of plant and animal species you won't see anywhere else. Is there any better way to teach children to love their planet than to show them the variety of natural habitats that exist on it?

Explore the traditional culture of the Borneo longhouses where multiple generations have lived together under the same roof for centuries. Wander the tropical rainforests that are home to the rare P Proboscis monkey. Take the canopy walk rising 55 meters above the treetops, culminating in suspension bridges that are straight out of an Indiana Jones movie. Bring your hiking boots and canvas gear – there are no roads that accommodate motor vehicles in the park so all travel must take place either on river corridors in traditional longboats or on rugged jungle paths.

An organized tour is probably your best way to explore the park since devoting days to arranging a park permit and transportation to and from Temburong is not how you want to spend your precious time in Brunei.
